Chris Donovan was born in Northern England and lived outside of London for most of his life. Donovan was formally trained as a graphic artist and established a successful career working with interior design firms in London. However, this energetic young artist travels constantly and the British Isles now serves as only an occasional resting place. Donovan has a passion to understand, experience, and explore different cultures. His travels have taken him to exotic locations all over the Pacific Rim, Africa, South America, Mexico, and Australia. He will sometimes stay in a foreign country for months at a time, working and immersing himself in the local culture.
Donovan’s travels define and influence his art. His original paintings are mixed-media assemblages that combine handmade papers, painted paper, and traditional painting, with cultural and textile design motifs. Many of the elements in Donovan’s work are collected in his travels and are then incorporated into his work. He creates multiple perspectives, glimpses of local artistic tradition, and unusual color combinations, which still maintain his natural sense of visual balance. The results are a new and fresh contemporary expression of world culture. Chris Donovan is now living in Northern California, but as always, he will soon be on the move again. The world beckons, and there is always something new to see and experience.
